How to Switch Carriers Without Losing Your Phone Number
Switching carriers to save money is one of the easiest ways to lower a monthly bill — and thanks to number porting, you can do it without giving up the phone number you've had for years. Here's exactly how the process works.
What is "porting" a number?
Porting simply means transferring your existing phone number from your old carrier to your new one. It's been a legal right in the U.S. for years, and every major and prepaid carrier is required to support it. Your number stays exactly the same — contacts, texts, and calls all keep working like nothing changed.
Step by step: how it actually works
1. Gather your account info
Before switching, you'll need three things from your current carrier: your account number, your PIN or account password, and your billing zip code. This information is usually on a recent bill or in your carrier's app under account settings.
2. Choose your new carrier and plan
Decide which carrier and plan fits your budget and coverage needs. If you're not sure which carrier has the best signal at your home or workplace, ask — we activate with nearly every major U.S. carrier and can point you toward the one that makes sense for your area.
3. Start the port during activation
When you activate your new SIM or eSIM, you'll be asked if you want to "keep your current number." Say yes, and enter the account details from step 1. This kicks off the port request with your old carrier.
4. Wait for the transfer to complete
Most ports complete within a few hours; some finish in minutes. Occasionally a port can take up to 24 hours if the old carrier requires manual verification. Your old service typically stays active until the port fully completes, so you won't lose coverage in the meantime.
Common reasons a port gets delayed
- Entering the wrong account number or PIN
- The account is still under contract or has an unpaid balance
- The billing name or zip code doesn't exactly match what the old carrier has on file
Do you lose anything by switching?
Your number, contacts, texts, and apps all stay exactly as they are — porting only affects which company provides your cell service. The only things that reset are carrier-specific extras like voicemail greetings, which take a couple of minutes to set up again.
